Greetings, my name is Brian VanPatten and I am the owner and operator of Designs By Nature South.
I have been in the green industry in Michigan for over 30 years. I have spent over 25 years serving as a horticulturist for a local Parks and Recreation department, where I oversee the development and maintenance of a local nature preserve and its adjoining arboretum.
I am well versed in the impacts that invasive species have on our natural landscapes and have worked to restore degraded areas within the local park system. My passion for restoration was a natural lead in to my partnership with Vern and opening my native nursery.
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Forest Management from Michigan Technological University - Go Huskies!! I've spent 5 years as the Forestry Technician for the City of Flint prior to my tenure with the local park system.
I believe in maintaining a high level of professionalism by staying abreast of recent industry issues that threaten our native ecosystems. I am a Registered Forester with the State of Michigan, an ISA Certified Arborist, as well as a Certified Pesticide Applicator. I've maintained these valuable credentials throughout my career as a way of showing my commitment to my profession. Now I am bringing this commitment to my nursery!
